This chair was designed by a small group of students.
The final prototype model is shown here. At half scale, it works as a high-quality representation of the design. Some parts are made at the university makerspaces and others in a residential garage. It’s made from aluminium square tube, 3D printed PLA, fixings, and paint.

Process
The course began with understanding linkage mechanisms. This knowledge was used in a project, lasting the remainder of the semester. This consisted of tasks set, and presentations critiqued by an industry professional. Some of these were drawings and sketches, some were basic physical prototypes, but most were CAD, done in SolidWorks and Fusion360




CAD Iterations
Design iterations, including CAD deliverables, started as two completely separate concepts (Marked One and Two). One was carried forward and developed. This happened again with Three and Four. Each design change was built on what had come before it.

The feet were one of our most important features. Starting simple but inflexible, like flat disks on a hinge, they were later developed into fully adjustable (albeit complex) spiked feet to prevent uneven rocking.
These feet are attached to a ball joint, in turn connected to the chair leg with a screw. Adjusting them requires an effortless twist.
