Knife Guard
For Visual Impairment
Result
The object of this design is to make life easier for someone with a visual impairment, who is either entirely impaired or only partially.
The risk in the kitchen for a visually impaired person tends to be around sharp objects like knives. This guard aims to extract the fear of using the knife in the kitchen.
It does this by creating an aluminium barrier around the thumb and pointing finger, the most often used. These "finger guards" are then joined with appropriately placed hinges, and attached to the wrist with a band.
Process
The process used to arrive at the final concept involved sketching, prototypes, and user testing, which, through a process of elimination, whittled down to a final design.
The final prototype is made from bent PVC pipe, rivets, and silver paint. Intended to be representative of an aluminium version.
