Knife Guard


Why a knife guard for a visually impaired person?
This guard was designed to assist individuals with visual impairments, whether complete or partial, to feel confident using knives in the kitchen. The final design features an aluminum cover for the thumb and index finger.

This project was best suited to a process centered on research, ideation, and prototyping, rather than using CAD or renders.











Result

The process resulted in a final model constructed from a PVC pipe, which was heated and bent into shape. After being sanded and painted, it was designed to resemble an aluminum part. The model is inspired by the human hand, which guided the placement of the hinges.
User testing showed that the design has potential and works as intended.
